Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy
SOFIA is an airborne observatory used in a collaborative research program made up of private non-profit companies, universities and corporations, lead by the NASA Ames Research Center. The aircraft is a converted Boeing 747SP designed to hold a 2.5 meter (98.5 in) diameter telescope. SOFIA observes space in a low water vapor environment that allows a larger range of infrared to be available for imaging.
Modelwerks was contracted to make the turbine engines for a wind tunnel model of the converted 747SP.
